Anything's Possible
An honorary post to Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance, I present to you the beauty that is Anything's Possible.
In most films regarding trans characters, the focus is often the person's body, such as what intimacy looks like, or another character coming to terms with the protagonist being trans. This movie is different. Although Khalid builds up the confidence to ask out Kelsa, a trans girl, there is no battle surrounding her identity, instead focusing on the lack of social acceptance regarding their relationship.
At the beginning of the school year, Kelsa explains her goals of thriving rather than simply surviving on her YouTube channel. Similarly, Khalid wants to live his dreams and not succumb to societal expectations, doing so by pursuing Kelsa, despite a transphobic and homophobic best friend, and creating his own future, even when they clash with his parents’ wishes. The final obstacle the two must overcome is high school drama. Friendships break as the school explodes into chaos when the couple make their relationship public.
One of the most memorable moments is Kelsa debating whether to live as stealth (those around would not know about her trans identity) on her YouTube channel. To quote, she beautifully says, "So what would you rather: the existential despair of not being known or the existential despair of being known and being rejected?" As someone in a similar position as Kelsa (as well as the actor: Eva Reign, who is also trans), she accurately portrays the inner turmoil one experiences and is a key form of representation.
All in all, it was refreshing and heartwarming to see a trans character chosen time after time by her crush/partner. Characters are not afraid to be vulnerable and honest, while also remaining relatable and realistic. The film addresses issues like transphobia without being too heavy-handed, instead highlighting a sweet story of love, kindness, acceptance, and growth.
Side note: Using English class as an excuse to watch movies?? Count me in. Seriously though, blogging about movies I've had the pleasure of watching has been an incredible outlet to express their true beauty. I would like to shoutout Aditi's blog, which discusses the basic act of kindness that is holding doors for others. Very positive topic :) Also shoutout to Elan for bringing us yummy bread.
